An American Woman Commented On Swami Vivekanand’s Clothes, His Reply Left Her Ashamed!

Swami Vivekanand, who had launched a revolution that still resonates around the world today, has been an inspiration for youth over a century. He’s a soul who enlightened the minds and conscious of many. He was the first Indian to represent his country and Hinduism at the gigantic platform- Parliament of the World’s Religions in the year 1893.

It was during that time when Swami Vivekanand was in Chicago for world’s religious conference; he had some time for himself and walked along a street in Chicago in his saffron robe. While he was walking near a park, an American woman, who had been conspicuously observing him for some time, couldn’t control her curiosity and asked him, “Can’t you wear proper clothes to look like a gentleman?”

Swami Vivekananda with a polite smile and gesture replied, “In your culture, a tailor makes a gentleman; but, in our culture, Character makes a gentleman.”

And yes, it was a great spontaneous witty comeback by Swami then. The woman was taken aback with such pragmatic response.

Even today, this statement holds good. The character should make a person glorify not a tuxedo. Bright clothes may make a human look good but a lack of proper behavior and ethics won’t make him good.
