Bengaluru Metro/Namma Metro May Complete by 2035 Says Authorities
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is going to complete the entire 94 km of phase 1 and 2 project in 15 years as the speed at which the project is being implemented is very slow and it will complete by the year 2035 or beyond that. The second phase of 72 km, which will connect the major tech hubs of the city, is expected to start only after phase 1 is finished.
The co-founder of RailYatri.in Kapil Raizada which is a train travel content creator said that “Considering phase-wise completed track length, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is lagging behind both the Delhi Metro and Delhi Airport Metro projects.”
BMRCL is yet to complete the first phase of 42.3 km network, which is well beyond schedule and is expected to be completed by the next year. The government has not given a deadline on the completion of the second phase since it is yet to begin the land acquiring process. Completing 42.3 km of phase 2 will require another 16.7 years. And given that phase 2 is scheduled to start only after the completion of phase 1, the end date works out to between 2032 and 2033
The Delhi metro has achieved just 8.06 km per year in Phase 1. The speed increased to over 15 km per year, with the total of 193 km of phases 1 and 2 being completed in 12.8 years. Delhi Metro aims to go even faster in Phase 3 currently under progress.
Whereas Namma Metro (literally “Our Metro”) is still struggling to complete its 22.7 km of phase 1 while already in its eighth year. Namma Metro also known as Bangalore Metro is a metro system for the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The agency responsible for its implementation is the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka.
The funding for the BMRCL comes from both center and state government. It is the third rail network in the country after Kolkata and New Delhi with such a low speed to complete.
Namma Metro (BMRCL) is one of the six projects being monitored by the PMO under the Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation (PRAGATI) platform.
Given Namma Metro’s track record, completing 42.3 km of phase 2 will require another 16.7 years. And given that phase 2 is scheduled to start only after the completion of phase 1, the end date works out to between 2032 and 2033.
