Bollywood actress of the 90s, Mamta Kulkarni, was detained and her husband reportedly arrested in a drug trafficking case by the police in Kenya on Thursday. A senior official from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) here told The Hinduthat while the report of her detention seems to be true, there has been no official communication received by the agency yet. According to the official, Ms. Kulkarni’s husband Vicky Goswami was arrested in Kenya in a drug trafficking case. “The actress has been detained and is being questioned by the authorities to ascertain her role,” the source said.

The couple, taken into custody on Sunday last week, is being interrogated by the Kenya police. Both Mamta and Vijay were arrested following an investigation by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Mombasa Police department.

Mamta Kulkarni took Bollywood by storm with her bold act in films like ‘Ashiq Awara’, ‘Sabse Bada Khiladi’, ‘Baazi’ and ‘Karan Arjun’  among others. According to reports, in 1997 Mr. Goswami was arrested by the Dubai police for trafficking about 11.5 tonne of Mandrax. Subsequently, a Dubai court sentenced him to 25 years of imprisonment but he was released last year.

While Mamta is currently being quizzed by the police for her alleged involvement in the case, she might be deported to India if found guilty. However, reports are that her husband Vicky who was earlier convicted and imprisoned for trafficking mandrax in the city, might be deported to the US.

The arrest that took place on Sunday last week was the result of a top-secret joint operation by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Mombasa Police department. The FBI has now joined the operation that has so far spanned across three continents. Though Mamta Kulkarni is being detained and interrogated, the Kenya police and the DEA is yet to formally charge the former Bollywood actress.

However, “China Gate” turned out to be a disaster at the box office and the actress was upset with the director for cutting some of her scenes for his personal interests. The director denied the rumours and the incident marked the beginning of the end of Mamta’s career. The actress was also seen in a couple of South Indian films and her last movie was the 2002 release “Kabhie Tum Kabie Hum”, directed by Roop Dutta Naik.
