BSP Decides To Field Candidates For All 200 Assembly Seats In Rajasthan Elections
Jaipur: The Bahujan Samaj Party or BSP in Rajasthan has announced that the party is planning to contest all the 200 assembly seats, which are going for elections on December 7.
In the 2013 assembly elections, the party won three seats by securing a 3.37 percent vote share, which was a total of 7.60 percent in the 2008 elections, when the party succeeded in winning six seats.
“Our preparations are in full swing and we will contest on all 200 seats in the forthcoming elections,” state party vice president Dungarram Gedar said.
The party had contested in the last assembly elections for a total of 195 constituencies.
He also informed that the party will take decisions regarding the ticket finalization soon and BSP chief Mayawati will hold rallies for campaigning in the state.
“We are expecting to increase our tally in the 2018-elections because people are unhappy with both the BJP and the Congress. There is a resentment against the ruling BJP and people are not seeing any hope in the Congress,” another BSP leader Bhagwan Singh said.
The rallies will be held in various parts of the state during elections with the party chief, he said.
The main vote bank of the party is the significant population of Scheduled Castes (SC) in districts of eastern Rajasthan like Dholpur, Bharatpur, Sawaimadhopur, Karauli, Alwar and in northern parts like Hanumangarh, Bikaner, Sriganganagar.
There is a total of 34 Scheduled Castes and 25 Scheduled Tribe seats in the state out of the total 200 seats.
“The BSP is contesting solo and the Congress is going to suffer a loss,” he said over a recent announcement by Mayawati over not going for an alliance with the Congress to contest assembly polls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The party has continued contesting assembly elections in the state since 1990, but was victorious only in 1998 by winning a total of two seats.
The party fielded a total of 108 candidates in the year 1998 and was successful to secure 2.17 percent vote share.
The party fought a total of 124 constituencies in the 2003 elections and won two seats and was successful in increasing its vote share to 3.98 percent.
In the 2008 elections, the party registered its biggest victory in the state when six of its party candidates won elections and the vote share increased up to 7.60 percent.
But despite that victory, BSP did not gain from it, because all the six BSP MLAs joined the Congress and supported Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government.
