CWG 2010 Lightning Scam Convicts Sentenced by Delhi Court with 6 Years Jail Term

Delhi Court Sentences CWG Convicts Including A1 TP Singh

Delhi court has sentenced fourth other MCD officials with a jail term of four years each. Political pundits and many other NGO’s battling for the justice of CWG scam were found celebrating the conviction and punishment delivered by the court of law. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which was assigned to probe the CWG scam urged the Delhi Court to penalize the seven convicts of this case with stringent punishment. Among  the seven convicts of the CWG scam, four officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are alleged to conspire a loss of Rs 1.4 crore to the exchequer in the 2010 Commonwealth Games street lighting scam.

After being through the arguments made by the CBI prosecutor and counsel for the convicts, Special judge of CBI Judge Brijesh Garg assessed the case on Wednesday announcing his judgment. Being the very first case of CWG to be adjudged by a court, lightning scam case is drawing the attention of the nation. Praneet Sharma, CBI prosecutor claimed that a loss of Rs 1.42 crore was caused by the convicts to the  Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). CBI prosecutor after delivering his arguments urged the Delhi court to award a jail term of at least seven years each for the convicts.

Delhi Court Show no Mercy Towards CWG Lighting Scam Convicts  

CBI prosecutor requested the magistrate, no to take any lenient eyeshot of the convicts citing a few Supreme court judgments in corruption cases. MCD Superintendent Engineer D K Sugan, Executive Engineer O P Mahla, Accountant Raju V and the civic body’s tender clerk Gurcharan Singh were a few others who were convicted by the court besides Managing Director TP Singh and Director J P Singh of Sweska Powertech Engineering Pvt Ltd.

All these convicts of the CWG lightning scam were charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery of valuable security, forgery for purpose of cheating, using forged documents as genuine under the IPC and Section 13(1)(d)(criminal misconduct by public servant by corrupt means and abusing position) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Representing the six other convicts of the CWG lightning scam counsel advocated and recommended the court to show indulgence towards while announcing the conviction basing their past no criminal records. Counsel also called to acknowledge the 11 months of jail term spent by the convicts during the trial.

CWG lighting scam convict, Sugan’s counsel said “Sugan is suffering with diabetes, who has to look after his family, college-going daughter and paralytic father. He was awarded for constructing building in civic center in the past for his loyal service to the MCD. Counsel of Sugan further added “since no departmental inquiry was pending in his case thus court of law would be appreciated of it showers some mercy over him awarding him lighter punishment.” Another MCD convict Mahla’s counsel said has presented similar arguments in before the court averring that there were no departmental enquiries and charge sheets  against him and has been highly acclaimed by the department conferring him for his service towards slaughter-house project.
