Deadly Winds Are Blamed for Mecca Grand Mosque Crane Collapse in Saudi Arabia

Saudi  Arabia national administration states dead winds as the main cause behind the collapse of the crane which killed about 107 million people on Friday, September 11, 2015. An investigation which has been ordered after the mishap conveys that crane erected for the renovation work in Islam’s holiest shrine Mecca mosque fell due to the strong winds.

Investigation Over Crain Collapse in Mecca Mosque Reveals Stormy Winds as Cause

Director general of the Civil Defence Authority, General Suleiman al-Amr said “Heavy rain and strong winds of unusually high speed led to the uprooting of trees, the fall of panels and the collapse of the crane” while addressing media while sharing the investigation report of the crane collapse.

He further added “The number of deaths may increase while as many as 238 people are said to be injured in the accident who were found to be with lightly wounds later.” Immediately after the occurrence of the accident in Islam’s holiest shrine Mecca mosque an investigation was ordered by the Mecca’s governor Prince Khaled al-Faisal.

Due to the construction work in major parts of the city centre high cranes have been erected which has crowded the skyline. Mecca Grand Mosque large area is undergoing expansion and renovation prior to the holy Haj pilgrimage. Islam’s holiest place Haj which had witnessed a few  deadliest mishaps where the previous one was a stampede in 2006. Hundreds of pilgrims were reported to have died during this stampede.

In order to prevent accidents authorities at holy shrine have broadened access paths and imposed limits on the millions of Muslims who converge on Mecca to perform the annual rite. On the condition of the anonymity an unnamed Saudi official said “the pilgrimage would go ahead as planned” who has been organizing the haj since a few years. “The incident won’t affect the haj pilgrimage this year and repairs to the damaged section (of the mosque) will begin within days” added the official.
