Farhan Akhtar Stands Up For Nirbhaya, Speaks Up Against Juvenile Rapist’s Release
On Saturday, the ‘juvenile’ rapist of Nirbhaya case was moved out of Delhi amidst several protests, candle light marches, and hatred from public. Many politicians, common citizens, and activists unanimously condemned the release of the juvenile rapist and the Rajya Sabha has finally got down to discussing the Juvenile Justice Bill. Delhi Commission for Women moved a plea against the release of the accused, which the Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Monday.
One celebrity who spoke out clearly against the release of the juvenile is Farhan Akhtar. While Bollywood celebrities have stayed away from commenting on the same, actor-director Farhan Akhtar has come forward to protest against the rapist’s release and asked that the honorable court’s decision be revised.
Interacting with the media, Farhan said how unfair it was to release the juvenile rapist. Speaking to NDTV, he said that if someone is mature enough to commit a crime, they should be treated like adults in the court.
Farhan who also runs the MARD (Men Against Rape And Discrimination) campaign spoke about how juvenile laws in India need a revaluation. “Is the so-called juvenile really reformed? Keeping in mind that such is the law of the land, which in my humble opinion, requires a re-evaluation itself, there should be a series of psycho-analytical tests done on the man by leading experts in the field to understand if he is in fact reformed. If the tests to prove his reformation prove inconclusive, he should be tried again in a court of law as an adult.”
