For The First Time, Two Indian Institutes Listed Top 200 University Rankings In World
At last, the Indian universities had been listed in the list of Top 200 universities in the world. For the first time, Indian universities are into the top list. The both universities are The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. This list was made by Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS). They have been ranked 147 and 179 for the year 2015-2016 lists. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard Universities are been in the top two positions.
According to the QS there are 14 Indian institutions in the World University Rankings and about 7 universities are among the top 400 listed universities. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi which was ranked 235th in the world has improved its position from last year. University of Delhi and the University of Mumbai have lost their ranks due to the normalization by faculty applied to the research indicator but also due to deterioration in other dimensions as well.
Ranks of the famous universities in India are like this, IIT Bombay (202), IIT Madras (254), IIT Kharagpur (286th), IIT Roorkee (391st) and IIT Kanpur (271) respectively. Jawaharlal University lead the University in Arts, Science and Humanities table placed at 168 while the Delhi University is placed at 169 in this field. London is the only city in the world with four universities in the top 50, with the London School of Economics and Political Science making the top 40 for the first time.
A step forward: IISc
“The rankings are largely due to our first undergraduate batch graduating this year. This was one of the criteria needed to feature in the global rankings,” said Anurag Kumar, Director, IISc, adding that the institute had ensured information was given in the correct format to facilitate proper reflection of the performance of the institute on the global stage. “Our performance has remained high. Other universities are catching up due to the impetus given to research in their regions. For us to be in the top 50, we need investment and support for our faculty,” he said.
This is the 12th edition of QS’ annual ranking of the world’s top universities, which uses six performance indicators to assess institutions’ global reputation, research impact, staffing levels and international complexion. US have the largest number of institutes at 154, the UK has 71, and Germany has 43 and France, 41 in the Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) list.
