Freia David, The Woman With Down Syndrome Who Worked For 32-Years At A McDonald’s In Massachusetts Have Passed Away
Freia David, the woman with Down Syndrome who worked for 32-years at a McDonald’s in Massachusetts has passed away.
Freia passed away last week, she worked at the fry station for more than 30 years.
The obituary of Freia was published by the Boston Globe.
The obituary said, “Freia was born to a loving family, having Down Syndrome, but this never slowed her down. She graduated from Needham High School, participated in Special Olympics, had many friends, and enjoyed music, movies, and Mickey Mouse. For 32 years she worked at McDonald’s of Needham where she served up spectacular French fries, teased her co-workers, and greeted everyone with a smile.”
And added, “At the age of three, she began going to classes at the Charles River Center, and throughout her life, this outstanding organization helped her to grow. For the last fifteen years, she was helped, supported, and allowed to blossom as a resident of a group home.”
Freia stopped working at McDonald’s 3 years ago, she was often called a “minor local celebrity” in the city.
When she retired from her position, her colleagues gave her a silver necklace that had a fry-carton pendant and a proclamation that came from the state House of Representatives.
When she was interviewed while she was working at McDonald’s, Freia said, “It was nice, I’m really happy. I like all my friends here.”
She started to work at the McDonald’s in 1984 through a program that allowed adults who were diagnosed with disabilities to work.
When Freia came in McDonald’s for her shift, she used to greet all her fellow colleagues with a warm hug.
Rony Sandoval, the manager of the McDonalds said, “When she saw any kids in the lobby, she started making fries and would come out and say, ‘Hi sweetie!’ ”
Rony also described Freia as a ‘lovely, lovely girl’.
Freia was also one of the first persons who was selected in the program.
The funeral of Freia will be held next month. The obituary from the Boston Globe said, “To all the members of both these organizations our family gives heartfelt thanks! We invite family, friends, and community to celebrate Freia’s extraordinary life at a Memorial Service in the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave., NEEDHAM, on Tuesday, June 18, at 11.30am.”
