Gmail Will Soon Alert Users When An Unencrypted Mail Arrives

Gmail, the popular Email service provided by Google is now focusing on taking security threats for Gmail users. It will soon alert Gmail users about the risk in opening unencrypted email arriving from unknown sources. The search engine giant, Google is tightening the loose strings by placing a firm defence against internet attacks by introducing this new feature in Gmail. Google is currently working on warnings that will pop up whenever messages or an email is received from unencrypted sources.

Google has specifically introduced this feature to control the internet attacks occurring between two email providers. Google has noted that the security of its user’s data is more vulnerable when they receive a message sent through a different email provider. Google unveiled the results of its research into email security in a recent blog post.

Nicolas Lidzborski, Gmail Security Engineering Lead Said in a Blog post:

“We’re constantly working to help make email more secure for everyone. These efforts are reflected in security protections like default HTTPS in Gmail as well as our Safer Email Transparency report, which includes information about email security beyond just Gmail.”

Google Enhances Security for Gmail

A joint study was conducted in partnership with the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan over the course of two years that has exposed hopeful results, bestowing enhanced dependence on encryption industry-wide. However, these threats might not affect the communications between Gmail to Gmail, but they affect messaging between providers. The announcement from Google came with the study results indicating that email encryption is on the rise along with other security measures prevent spam and fraud by better authenticating messages.

Security for Gmail

Google already has some security measures in areas, like for instance, Gmail rigorously relies on an HTTPS connection for communication between a browser and its servers. But whenever a mail is sent and received between two different email providers, the message is left unencrypted, making it vulnerable for security attacks. With this new alert feature, Gmail intends to warn its users from opening a message that is unencrypted. Google has employed this latest measure to make Gmail protected than ever before.

Currently, Gmail encrypts 57 percent of messages received from other email providers, while the conversations taking place between Gmail accounts is encrypted most of the times. Earlier this year, Google has introduced a new password alert feature that warned users when someone attempted to log in to their account from untrusted site. Hope, Google will soon send warnings about unencrypted emails in the coming months.
