Indian Railways May Provide Alternative Trains For Waiting-List Passengers

Here is good news for the people who often travel in trains. There are many situations where common people who suffered to go to other places when there are no trains available and no tickets available. In the context of category of waiting list candidates, the Railways is now planning for another alternative that to provide berths in other trains running on the same route with the same ticket.

Keeping in mind the inconvenience caused to passengers whose wait-listed tickets do not make it to the confirmed list, this alternative has been done by the Central Railway Authority. This proposal is under acceptance, once if this is approved, passengers will be given the option to complete their journey on different trains without having to cancel their tickets and refund.

Additional Director General of the Railway Board, Anil Kumar, told that, “The proposal for providing berths in alternative trains is still at the initial stage. The idea is to run all trains with full capacity.” He added, “Often we find that on a particular route, some trains are always overbooked and passengers seek berths in it even when their tickets are way down on the waiting list.”

It may be recalled that IRCTC had in June come up with a scheme by offering passengers who fail to get their waitlisted ticket confirmed an option to convert it into an airline ticket at a competitive fare. The Railway PSU tied-up with budget carrier GoAir. IRCTC would be sending e-mails to waitlisted passengers who seek to avail the benefit under the scheme. Passengers booking train tickets right from sleeper class to AC classes can avail the facility.

“Since there are many trains running on almost every route, we are working to provide passengers the option to travel on alternative trains if their tickets do not get confirmed.” Saxena also said passengers will be given the option to mention the train numbers of alternative trains other than one want to primarily take. “Implementing the plan is not an easy task. For this, major up gradations have to be made in the CRIS – Center for Railway Information Systems,” he added.
