Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS)-1D satellite which is designed and architectured by ISRO weighs 1,425 kg and it would be placed in the orbit by India’s leading space and astronomy body ISRO with its launching vehicle PSLV C-27. The 59.5 hours countdown of the IRNSS-1D satellite was initiated on 26th March 2015 which would be progressing smoothly and slowly till the much anticipated time of the launch arrives.

AS Kiran Kumar chairman of ISRO claimed that the launch of the satellite would help a person on the ground locate his geographical position in the Indian region. He said in a media interaction that “Once four satellites are up in space, using a receiver on the ground you can independently locate yourself, you can determine your position in terms of latitude-longitude and height. So this will give us independent geographic positioning system in the country.”

Initially the launch of the IRNSS-1D satellite was scheduled for March 9 but was later deferred due to an anomaly found in the telemetry transmitter. IRNSS-1D would be the fourth satellite in series of seven satellites as planned earlier by ISRO to put in place the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. Earlier all the prior satellites which were successfully placed in the orbit were launched from Sriharikota on July 1, 2013, April 4, 2014 and October 16, 2014 respectively. All these three regional navigational satellites as part of a constellation of seven satellites to provide accurate position information service to users across the country and the region, extending up to an area of 1,500km.

Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre M.Y.S. Prasad claimed that “The rocket has been moved to the launch pad or the umbilical tower. The rocket will be fixed to the umbilical tower.” He further added ” after the rocket is connected to the umbilical tower system, checks would be carried out including full rocket and satellite checks.”
