Japan To Invest $140 billion To Modernize Indian Railways

Japan has come forward and agreed to invest about $140 billion on the modernization of Indian railway stations across the country. This contract is going to be done for the next five years. Thus under this program of developing the railway stations, Indian railway has identified 400 railway stations which have to be upgraded in many ways and are listed to develop with the help of Japan investments.

Japan has been ready to provide all the help and needs to develop the stations regarding the problems of sanitation like odorless toilets in trains and at stations, cleaning the stations and providing some equipment to reduce the human work. Japan delegates will soon come to India to study and get an idea what are the facilities to be introduced and the opportunities for industries in the railway station development plan of railways.

The Indian Railway minister Suresh Prabhu, is in visit to Japan to strengthen cooperation in rail sector. Thus he had meetings with the officials of Japan and other ministers in this regard. He said “Japan has also agreed to assist the public transporter in achieving its zero-accident mission.” And he also said has highlighted that the Indian public transporter would be the next major destination for infrastructure.

Major issues on which the two countries will be working together:

  1. Modernizing the railway stations.
  2. Japan will assist Indian Railways in achieving its zero-accident mission.
  3. Solving the issue of sanitation by working on the development of waterless and odorless toilets in trains and station.
  4. They will provide assistance in development of a legal framework for high speed railways in India.

Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO), will sign a MoU with Railway Technical Research Institute of Japan to carry out research work on acquiring modern technology for the public transporter, as per the finalization of the action plan. Participation of Japanese railways and Japanese companies in various areas of Indian Railways with the aim of modernization and technology upgrade was also emphasized in the discussions.
