Karti Chidambaram Challenges Fresh Summons In The Supreme Court

Karti Chidambaram moved to the Supreme Court today for seeking cancellation of summons by another central probe agency, the Enforcement Directorate. His request will be taken up by the Supreme Court tomorrow.

The son of the former Minister of Finance, P Chidambaram, Karti Chidambaram is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, for allegedly asking a bribe using the influence of his father in regularizing the investments made by a Television company, INX Media Group a decade earlier. Controversial couple Indrani and her husband Peter Mukerjea, who are in jail for murdering their daughter Sheena Bora, are the founders of INX Media Group.

The Enforcement Directorate on the other hand is looking into the allegations on laundering bribes received by the companies linked to the 46-year-old businessman, Karti Chidambaram.

The Congress Party and Mr Chidambaram called the arrest of Karti Chidambaram a “political vendetta” and said that this is an attempt to divert the focus of the media from the mega fraud by diamond jeweler Nirav Modi.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that it was just a case of the law taking its course.

However, the arrest is a positive sign for the BJP to mount a counter-offensive on the Congress party.

A notice is given in the Rajya Sabha by the Vice president of the ruling party Vinay Sahasrabuddhe to suspend the businesses to discuss allegations against relatives of former minsters, referring to the case of Karti Chidambaram.

While the CBI says that it had arrested Karti Chidambaram after the testimony of Indrani Mukerjea before the magistrate where the INX Media co-founder sought to link Karti Chidambaram and the payments by his father to the private firms, at the behest of the son.

Karti Chidambaram and Indrani Mukerjea were bought face-to-face yesterday with a video camera recording confrontation under the custody of CBI. However, it is yet to be clear on what transpired for the joint interrogation that continued for four hours.
