Makkonen, a Finnish national, passed away on Friday at the age of 63 following serious illness. But, he left behind a legacy. Makkonen put forth the idea of SMS at a Telecom conference in 1984. However, the first SMS was sent only in 1992.Despite being called as Father of SMS ,Makkonen never took credit for himself. He always said that it was the joint effort of other telecom firms that made SMS a big success. In 2012, Makkonen had an interview with the BBC. In this, the Father of SMS said that Nokia played a great role in popularizing the idea with its Nokia 2010 handset, launched in 1994. This phone made it easier to type and send SMS, while the others were more numerically oriented.

Yes, he is the Father of SMS and we cannot agree less with him. While most of the old technology invented in those ages were gone, the SMS still remains undisputed. If you think a little bit further, you will remember that the last SMS you sent was a bit recently. The Father of SMS also seemed to have  a good shot at the prediction of future technology. Makkonen also said that he would like someone to “integrate viewable mobile content in his spectacles”. Well, you know what he was talking about.
