The Islamic New year, popularly known as Muharram, begins on Friday and it is a time for Muslims to reflect on the past year and remember the origin and greatness of their faith. Muharram (Arabic: المحرّم) is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year. Since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar. The word “Muharram” means “Forbidden” and is derived from the word harām, meaning “sinful”. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which to Shia Muslims is part of the Mourning of Muharram.

The new moon was sighted in the Middle East and in the United States and European countries Friday. Accordingly, 5Islamic New Year 1436 H in the Arab states and the US and other countries commenced Saturday October 25, 2015. As per Wiki.

The Islamic Calendar was started 1434 years before by the second Caliph Omar ibn Khattab. Before that Muslims in their respective provinces, following the Arab tradition of the time, were used to count the days and months – with sighting of the new moon and counting the days thereafter without following any particular calendar or dating system.
