It is here – in a desperately poor region known as the Rice Bowl – that several mighty rivers meet before feeding into the sea. The
government has been accused of responding slowly to the crisis.

The United Nations pledged $9m (£6m) in assistance this past week and its agencies were scaling up their emergency response. Affected people have been displaced to various areas, while others are unwilling to leave their homes, are living in houses that have been inundated by water.
