NASA Scientists Revealed How the Moon Got Its Tattoos

In the lunar surface about hundreds of locations are found with different patterns of light and dark which is termed as “tattoos” by NASA scientists. “These patterns, called ‘lunar swirls,’ appear almost painted on the surface of the Moon,” said John Keller, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in US.

“They are unique; we’ve only seen these features on the Moon, and their origin has remained a mystery since their discovery,” Mr. Keller said.

It is found previously that ancient bits of magnetic field are embedded in crust of lunar and bright area to less weathered than their surroundings.

The material which is exposed to space to change dark over time along with the microscopic meteorites and solar wind with a million mile per hour speed conducting gas from surface of the sun. The solar wind are electrically charged and respond to magnetic forces. Scientists created some computer models to provide the insights of how the magnetic shield hypothesis could work.

“The problem with the magnetic shield idea is that the embedded magnetic fields on the Moon are very weak — about 300 times weaker than Earth’s magnetic field,” said Bill Farrell of NASA Goddard. “It’s hard to see how they would have the strength to deflect the solar wind ions,” Mr. Farrell added.

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) will provide support for magnetic shield hypothesis, but will not rule the other ideas.
