New Year 2016: Best Places To Watch New Year’s Eve Fireworks For Free In London

London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display on the River Thames is one of the most spectacular events of the year. The Tickets for event have already sold out and around 100,000 people paid £10 to be near the display. But, because London is bloody smashing, there are plenty of places you can watch it for free. For those wanting to brave the cold to welcome in 2016, prime viewing spots can be found across the capital. Get there early in the day and be prepared with water, fizz and snacks – and be prepared to fight the crowds.

Best Places To Watch New Year’s Eve Fireworks For Free In London

Here are the best options:

1. Tower Bridge

This iconic London landmark is really close to ticketed areas so the view will be excellent. You’ll need a big winter coat, plus hat, scarf and gloves.

2. Alexandra Palace

Alexandra Park in north London is an ideal spot to watch the fireworks, as there are likely to be less crowds. The easiest way to access the park is from Wood Green underground station. Wrap up warm and bring a blanket.

3. Cardiff

You can celebrate the Calennig in the capital of Wales for free – and there are bus shuttles running to and from the venue – free of charge.

4. Hampstead Heath

Because the Heath is so big, it’s less likely to become so overcrowded so it’s a win for families. Head to a high spot and enjoy the explosive views.

5. Hilly Fields

The highest point of Hilly Fields, located in Brockley in south London, has fantastic views across the city. You can get to Hilly Fields via Ladywell or Crofton Park stations. Head to Brockley or Honor Oak for a great selection of bars and pubs for a warm-up drink afterwards.

6. Cannon Street/Monument

Both of these central London areas are outside the ticketed zone and will provide a good view of the fireworks. Make sure you avoid Embankment, Waterloo and Charing Cross stations, which are all in ticketed areas. A word of warning, these are prime locations so expect large crowds.

7. Primrose Hill

Located on the northern side of Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill is one of the highest points in London at 256 ft (78 m) high and offers views across central London. There will also likely be smaller, local firework displays on offer. The nearest tube station is Chalk Farm.

8. Hampstead Heath

Further out from the city, Hampstead Heath is a fantastic family-friendly spot to watch the fireworks which is likely to be less busy than central London. The grassy public space is one of the highest points in London and runs from Hampstead to Highgate. Parliament Hill has the best views.

9. Cornwall

Head to the Habour Front in St. Ives for a NYE extravaganza. It’s the area’s biggest street party of the year. Locals are encouraged to go in fancy dress and there’s a banging samba band before fireworks at midnight.

10. Lambeth Bridge

Lambeth Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge offer good, but slightly obscured views, of the fireworks.

11. Newcastle

The streets of this northeast city will be laden with monsters as we bid farewell to 2015.
Don’t worry, the cast of Geordie Shore aren’t on the loose – there’s a Parade of Monstrous Beasties as part of the NewcastleGateshead Winter Carnival.

12. Manchester

Local businesses have pooled together to treat residents to a firework display in the city centre. Head to Albert Square.
