‘No One Has The Right To Ask Me What Happens In My Bedroom’: Sania Mirza In BBC Interview

Sania Mirza, a tennis star in India is well known to be vocal off the tennis court. She once again proves this in an interview with BBC. She shared her views and opinions about her travails of being a woman in a ‘man’s world’. Sania Mirza also had a word of caution for all those who want to find out the details of her personal family aspirations.

When you’re a woman you have to fight a lot harder. It has nothing to do with India, it has nothing to do with this side of the world. It’s to do with the world,” Sania said. “We live in a man’s world. A lot of people might come out and say we don’t, but the fact of the matter is that sometimes when you are a woman you have to fight a lot harder for things.”

“It has got nothing to do with this side of the world or India, it has got to do with the world. It’s only in recent past that we have had equal prize money for both men and women. So it doesn’t just happen in India like people like to believe,” Sania said during the interview. She also feels it’s difficult for a woman to express her mind.

“So when a woman comes out and say that this how I feel, she’s either labeled as rebellious or too outgoing or career-minded. But there are no such words for men. When a man wants to go and achieve something, he’s labelled as so ambitious,” said Sania. Despite her success the one question she faces repeatedly is, “When are you going to have children?“.

“I feel it’s extremely disrespectful to ask someone when they are having a child. Just because I am a public figure, it doesn’t give anyone a right to ask me what happens in my bedroom. I really don’t think so,” replied Sania. Sania continues to inspire Indian girls and now has her sights on winning a medal in the Rio Olympics next year.
