Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated in Kerala and is the State festival. It is the festival of harvest, brings with it truck loads of good cheer and prosperity. Every year this festival falls on the Malayalam month of Chingam – between August and September and also known as the harvest festival of Kerala also  marks the commemoration of Vamana avatara of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali who Malayalees consider as their King. In Kerala, it is the festival celebrated with most number of cultural elements such as Vallam Kali, Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onathappan, Thumbi Thullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onathappan, Atthachamayam etc.

Onam Pookalam:

The most prominent event and notable ritual of Onam is the making of the pookalam designs. Pookkalam refers to making designs with different types of flowers in front of the gate of house. Atthapookalams (pookalam made on the Atham day) included flowers endemic to Kerala and the Dashapushpam (10-flowers), but nowadays all varieties of flowers are used. The most commonly used flowers are Mukkutti, Kakka Poovu, Mukkutti, Aripoo, Thumba, Thechipoovu, Hanuman Kireedom, and Chethi. The most important of all flowers is Thumba, reason being their small size and their glittery nature in the sun and also believed that the ‘Thumba Poo‘ is Lord Shiva’s favorite flower and King Mahabali was a big worshipper of Lord Shiva. Malayalis believe that King Mahabali’s soul visits every home in the state during these ten days of Onam, and on seeing beautiful pookolams greet him, he ensures that prosperity and happiness fill the people in that home.
