Oxygen, PH levels High In Devarabeesanahalli Lake: IISC Report
T V Ramachandra of Indian Institute of science says, “You may expect similar episodes in some more lakes fed untreated sewage.” He also released a report on Devarabeesanahalli lake, in which hundreds of fish perished earlier.
The Ecological Restoration, report says the pH levels showed high alkaline and dissolved oxygen levels extremely high with the water samples given. From the six different lake treatment plant, inlet, other two sites near corporate company lake are collected for the physico-chemical analysis.
“It was found that sewage water entering the lake had a comparatively higher amount of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC) an turbidity as compared to water in the middle and near the outlet,” said Ramachandra.
Devarabeesanhalli lake situated in Bengaluru is also the lake with unchecked flow of sewage, encroachments, loss of interconnectivity and sedimentatio. In these lakes the dissolved oxygen levels are found to be very high.
“The dissolved oxygen levels were found to be very high.High sodium content makes the lake water salty and unfit for use. The physio-chemical chracteristics of the lake indicate pollutionsewage entry into the water body, which falls under class E as per Central Pollution Control Board stan dards,” he added.
pH levels are ranged from 8.21-9.08. Sewage contamination is indicated with the high concentration of sodium and potassium. This lake Devaraneesanahalli is a lake in Bengaluru. Also the previous report on 105 wetlands by Ramachandra revealed lakes (98%) had been encroached. Another survey of akes in 2014-15 showed 90% of them were contaminated with sewage, 38% were surrounded by slums and 82% gives the loss of catchment area.
