Radiotherapy May Affect Lung Cancer Patients Adversely

The recent studies say patients getting treatment for early stages of Lung Cancer with radiotherapy is increasing the risk of death and also causes other than cancer. The risk of non-cancer deaths is increasing day by day as they give a high dosage of medicine which shows its effect on left atrium of the heart and superior vena cava with the strongest association and bonding.

“Our results show that even within a few years a radiation dose to the heart is associated with an increased risk of non-cancer death for early stage lung cancer patients, and they indicate which regions of the heart possibly play a role,” said Barbara Stam who is from the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam.

“Validation and further investigations into the exact mechanisms and which heart structures are critical is warranted, but clinically, this could mean that patients might benefit from heart-sparing radiotherapy,” Stam noted.

About 565 patients are analyzed by researchers who are diagnosed with early stage lung cancer which is known as early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in between 2006-13 in five institutions of Europe and North America are treated with radiotherapy called Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Minimizing the dosage of one organ can result in the higher dose in another organ with all the nearby multiple organs. By this, the researchers create a template to check how much radiation was delivered to each sub-structure of heart.

The researchers say they would be investigating the ways and how to deliver radio therapy while sparing the crucial heart structures to the farthest possible.
