Rare Himalayan Vulture Rescued From Srinagar By Wildlife SOS, Released in Dachigam
Himalayan Rare Griffon Vulture was rescued with bad health conditions near Dal Lake in Srinagar this month on Thursday in Dachigam National Park. In a perfect health condition, the old vulture took perfect flight at Kashmir unit of Wildlife SOS saved from a very dangerous situation.
“It was an adult male vulture, found lying on the bank of Dal Lake. There was no sign of injury or wound but it was extremely weak from dehydration and starvation. We think that it might have hit a tree or cables due to blindness in the right eye,” Aaliya Mir from Wildlife SOS-Srinagar.
The Wingspan of the bird is about eight feet long and three feet tall. This bird could not fly and hardly move its bills when commuters find it in Srinagar. It was given treatment from wildlife protection department by the veterinarian.
Dachigam National Park is the place where it is staying, which is the Wildlife SOS rescue centre for two weeks the practice place for flight. This vulture is found along the Himalayas and adjoining Tibetan Plateau. Under wildlife protection act this species is protected in 1972.
“The Himalayan Griffon vulture inhabits high mountainous regions and the Dachigam National Park is home to a fair population of this species,” Tahir Shawl, Wildlife Warden of Dachigam said.
“Himalayan vultures are one of the largest birds. I am grateful to the Wildlife Protection Department for their help and we are glad to have been able to release this exquisite bird back in its natural habitat, where it belongs,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-Founder Wildlife SOS.
