Rise In Mercury Deters Olive Ridley Turtles From Gathering For Mass Nesting
Every year over two lakh Olive Ridley Turtles gather at a place called Rushikuya Rookery for mass nesting in the month of April. This is an event that happens every year where these Turtles lay their eggs. This event will continue for four to six days. But this year it is already 11th April but there is no sign of this event yet.
This gathering of Olive Turtles is interrupted by the global warming and rising in mercury is blamed this year. Human lives are affected due to this global warming is known to everybody. As the global temperature is raising and is observed from decades is now effecting the animal kingdom also and questioning their survival.
The southern wind played a very crucial role in helping the Olive Turtles reach the beach said Retired Chief Conservator of Forests Sudhakar Mohapatra. He also says that this year the southern wind is missing that may be due to global warming.
It is observed unsuitable for mass nesting even in cloudy weather with the examination of 4 km long beach strip from Gokharakuda to Kantiagada. Another reason derived for the absence of mass nesting is the erosion of the beach which is explained by secretary, Rushikuya Sea Turtle Protection Committee, Rabindra Sahu.
The worlds larget rookery in the world is observed at Coastal Odisha where Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary which is facing secere heat wave condition with temperatures recording above 40 degree centigrade in past few days, which very high about 5 degree than the normal temperature.
There were some positive signs before two days for mass nesting but now the situation is different explained by Bhitarkanika National Park officials. This year we may not see the nesting as the turtles returned back the deep sea informed by Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary Ranger Subrata Kumar Patra.
