Saeed Jaffrey Versatile Actor Passes Away At 86

Indian-born British actor Saeed Jaffrey, who has appeared in numerous British and Indian movies from the late ’60s to the mid ’00s, has passed away at the age of 86.

The always-charming character actor Jaffrey, who was best known for his role in Hindi films such as Chashme Buddoor (1981), Masoom (1983), Mashaal (1984), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), Ram Lakhan (1989), Dil (1990), Ajooba (1991), and Henna (1991).

In 1978 Saeed Jaffrey Won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, 1986: Nominated: Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award-Ram Teri Ganga Maili, 1992: Nominated: Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award-Henna, 1991: Best Actor: 12th annual Genie Awards, Masala, 1988-89: TV series on Doordarshan: “Tandoori Nights.”

Saeed Jaffrey passes away at 86

His death was condoled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, director Shekhar Kapur among others on Twitter.

Saeed Jaffrey was born in Malerkotla, Punjab in a Punjabi Muslim family on 8 January, 1929. He started his career by setting up a theatre company called Unity Theatre, at New Delhi. His early theatrical work included roles in productions of Tennessee Williams, Christopher Fry, Wilde, and Shakespeare. In a career more than 40 years, actor Jaffrey worked with some of the finest actors across the world in a variety of cinema and became the first Indian to receive the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the dramatic arts.

“Today, a generation of Jaffreys has passed away. Saeed Jaffrey has joined his brothers and sister and is rejoicing in the lap of his Heavenly Father, eternally,” she wrote.
