The US space agency NASA has once again released the stunning image of Martian surface. This time scientists at NASA have unveiled a beautiful image of the Nili Fossae region of Mars.

Located on the northwest rim of Isidis impact basin, Nili Fossae is one of the most colorful regions of the red planet, say scientists.

NASA researchers explained that variation in colors on Mars is due to dust and regolith. But at Nili Fossae, the combination of exposed bedrock, sand dunes, and diverse rock composition allows the colors to come through brilliantly.

“The colors over many regions of Mars are homogenized by the dust and regolith, but here the bedrock is very well exposed, except where there are sand dunes. The rocks also have diverse compositions.”

Scientists also explained that Nili Fossae region is very ancient which explains about the layered bedrocks and complicated geologic history. “Nili Fossae is ancient and has had a complicated geologic history, leading to interesting structures like layered bedrock, as well as other compositions.”

This breathtaking image of Nili Fossae was captured on February 5, 2016, at 14:54 local Mars time by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera installed on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The camera aboard the spacecraft operates in visible wavelengths, the same as human eyes, but can also capture near-infrared wavelengths to obtain information on the mineral groups present.
