11 Dead, 50 Injured In The Stampede At Lord Shiva’s Temple In Deoghar

A tragedy took place in the Jharkhand at early hours of this Monday. the incident took place at around 5.45 AM at the Durga temple, which is about three kilometers away from the lord shiva temple in Belabagan locality in Deoghar district about 350 km from Ranchi. According to sources, in a stampede in a temple at least 11 people were killed and 50 others were injured in Deoghar district of Jharkhand.

Every year flocks of pilgrims gather at the famous Baidyanath temple in the month of august to offer prayers and the holy water of ganga to lord shiva.For lord shiva Monday is considered as the most auspicious day of Shravan month of the Hindu calendar.

Stampede in Deoghar Shiva Temple:

On the occasion of the second Monday of the month of Sawan. The devotees gathered at the ghat and to temple to offer prayers and holy water to the god. Acording to the district administration, the tragedy took place when people started trying to jump queue in order to get closer to the temple to offer prayers.

Most of the piligrims injured in the stampede occured at the lord shiva temple. Injured persons have been admitted in a near by local hospital. Most of them are from neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.

Despite Jharkhand stampede 1.10 lakh devotees throng Deoghar temple:

PM Narendra Modi expressed his grief and tweeted “I pray that the injured recover quickly. I spoke to CM Raghubar Das ji on the incident. “Pained at loss of lives due to the stampede in Jharkhand. My thoughts & prayers are with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief”.

It was expected that more then two lakh devotees were to  offer puja on Monday.Devotees were standing in two long queues for their turn to offer holy water at the temple. The incident happened at 10 km away from the temple. But on Monday, the queue went 15 km away from the temple.

To offer prayers on Monday to lord shiva pilgrims take holy Ganga water from Sultanganj near Bhagalpur in Bihar and cover about 98 kms on feet to offer the holy water to Lord Shiva at the famous Baba Dham temple.

Jharkhand CM announces compensation for the injured:

This morning(Monday) Raghubar Das , Jharkhand Chief Minister has announced compensation

  • Those who were  killed in an early morning stampede would be given Rs two lakh compensation
  • The injured would be given Rs 50,000, said in an official statement.

The rescue operation and treatment of more than 30 persons have been supervised by Home Secretary N N Pandey, Additional Director General of Police S N Pradhan and other officials and the Chief Minister is monitoring the situation.

In August,2007 same kind of tragedy took place at least five women were killed and 11 were injured in a stampede at the Baba Baidyanath temple.
