Strong 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Tajikistan; Mild Tremors Felt In Delhi, North India

An earthquake measuring 7.2 magnitude struck in Tajikistan on Monday, shaking buildings as far away as New Delhi, and in Pakistan, the US Geological Survey and witnesses said. Tremors were also felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, tremors were felt in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The epicentre of the quake was 111 km (65 miles) southwest of Karakul, the USGS said.

The temblor, which hit some 130 miles east of the Tajik capital of Dushanbe at 12:50 a.m. (2:50 a.m. ET), shook buildings in cities in Afghanistan. But no major damage of life or property has been reported yet. More details on today’s earthquake are expected soon.

In October, an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale hit North West Afghanistan with its epicentre about 50 km southwest of the city of Jarm near Afghanistan’s border with Tajikistan.
