Swachh Sarvekshan Awards 2016: Hyderabad Ranks In 19th Position
The Swachh Hyderabad program taken up in May 2015 has ended with a good result, following the initiatives taken by the Telangana State Government for making Hyderabad a global City. A survey was commissioned by the Union ministry of urban development and conducted by the Quality Council of India to assess sanitation and hygiene in 73 cities.
Hyderabad was ranked 275th among the 476 cities in India, now it is ranked 19th among 73 major cities with populations of more than 10 lakh. Another city from Telangana was Warangal ranked 32. Mysore acquired the top position among 73 cities for the second time running. Prime Minister represented Varanasi was ranked 65.
The objective of the survey was to measure the scenario regarding sanitation in selected cities, efforts made by these cities to improve sanitation through necessary strategies, to assess the impact of Swachh Bharat Mission and to promote a spirit of healthy competition among cities, said the Urban Development Ministry.
GHMC commissioner Dr. B. Janardan Reddy said in a press release that the central government covered several aspects of a total of 2,000 marks. Hyderabad got 1,355 marks. “We have introduced innovative programs like prefabricated toilets, two dustbins to each household, procuring 2,000 auto tippers, and educating citizens and students,” he said.
