Hunger can drive a man to the verge. One such incident is – In the Singhbhum district of eastern Jharkhand, a tribal man sold his son for just Rs 1000 to feed the rest of his family.

Bhota Sabar from a small village of Baruniya in Dohlabeda Panchayat had six children and lost his wife recently. The entire burden of feeding his six children had shifted upon him after his wife’s demise. Bhota also got his hand injured recently, because of which he could not work, so there was none left to feed the family.

Hence, the poverty-stricken man sold his son for a meagre amount of Rs. 1000. The head of the village Sahdev Murmu, claims to have approached the village Block Development Officer as he sought to help Bhota in his difficult time. But before the BDO, Mrityunjay Kumar could extend any financial help; Bhota had already traded off his son.

The people of Sabar community, referred to as aadivaasis, are spread across five states in India, Jharkhand being one of them. Sabar is considered as an endangered tribe.

Now Bhota has appealed to the police for his son’s return and the police are on the lookout for the child. We hope that he gets his son back and some means to feed his family.
