This Muslim Group In Chennai Is Cleaning Flood-Hit Hindu Temples

While the entire nation has been debating over growing religious intolerance in the country, the recent Chennai floods have brought out a phenomenal level of unity and brotherhood between various religions. To top it all, a group of Muslim volunteers set an example of togetherness who took up the job of cleaning some temples where a huge amount of sewage and wastages have accumulated due to the rapid entry of flood water.

Around 50 members of Jammat E Islami Hind, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), have been quietly cleaning mosques as well as temples in the flood-hit areas of the city.  The group cleaned two temples, in Kotturpuram and Saidapet in last two days.

The group also explained why they were cleaning temples despite not being expected to. “We find Hindus are unable to worship at temples in some areas because they have been severely affected owing to floods. So, we cleaned the mosques and temples and the streets badly damaged in the two areas. In the coming week, we will do similar work in other areas of the city,” Peer Mohammed, student wing secretary (social service) of Jammat E Islami Hind, told The Hindu. “Throughout the process, people there helped us and were very happy that the cleaning was done,” he added.

Jalaludeen, secretary of the group, said they took utmost care while cleaning the temples in both areas.

Meanwhile, the official residence of Mohammed Abdul Ali (Amir Mahal), the prince of Arcot, had become a warehouse of sorts with relief material pouring in. Mr. Ali also commended the people of Chennai for coming together irrespective of caste, creed or religion to serve flood victims.

On the other hand, many Hindu organizations are also taking part in relief and rescue operations that have saved many lives belonging to all religions and castes. Chennai too has religious differences, like every other place. But the incessant Chennai rains can be seen as a blessing in disguise as it has proved that Chennai is not a place for religious hatred.
