Transgender Recruitment Civic Volunteers Ponders West Bengal Governement

To end the denounce discrimination against the transgender West Bengal state government has requested the  Kolkata Police to enroll transgender’s of the city in Civic Police Volunteer Force (CPVC). Kolkata police and the transgender’s association is mulling down over their recruit in the Civic Police Volunteer Force (CPVC). West Bengal state minister for women and child development, Shashi Panja exacted that she suggested Kolkata Police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha about the idea of recruiting transgenders for CPVC.

Kolkata Police  Mulls Over Recruitment of  Transgenders as Civic Police Volunteer Force

The idea of recruiting the transgenders for the Civic Police Volunteer Force is believed to have raised during a meeting of the West Bengal Transgender Development Board. Shashi Panja, West Bengal state minister for women and child development said “The prime issue that we face is that people don’t have respect for the transgender community. But if they are incorporated as volunteers in the civic police force, then it will gradually allow people to imagine them in different roles.”

Earlier Kolkata police were recommended  by the state women and child development and social welfare department to recruit volunteers from the community and after the requisite training, indoctrinate them into the CPVC. On the other hand the welfare board of the transgender’s is pondering over recruitment as civic volunteers to aid the Kolkata Police in a communal tasks like helping senior citizens to cross the roads during the busy Durga Puja days.

Member of the Transgenders Welfare Board Ranjita Sinha said “At our last meeting, we discussed whether transgenders could be inducted into the Civic Police Volunteer Force. During festivities such as the Durga puja, they could help the elderly navigate traffic intersections.”

She further added “the board also discussed the possibility of including a third gender member in the juries that honour the best Durga pujas in the city. These steps would boost mainstreaming efforts. With some training they can become efficient as civic volunteers.” Official statistics of the West Bengal government state that there are about 30,349 transgender community members while activists claim that the actual population to be much higher.
