Uber Driver In Delhi Plays Midwife And Helps Woman Deliver Her Baby In His Cab En Route To The Hospital

New Delhi: One Uber employee has earned a five-star rating, not for delivering his customer to the destination, but helping to deliver a new life into the world. And the baby is named after the firm, Uber.

Babli, the pregnant woman who was in labour, after repeated emergency calls for an ambulance went unanswered, hired a cab to take herself to the Safdargunj Hospital along with her aunt and neighbour from her residence at Sainik farms, Deoli village on Thursday night. Her husband Raj Kumar, a labourer couldn’t accompany them as he was on bed rest after a recent accident.

Shahnawaz, the driver, drove the trio towards Safdarjung hospital but had to halt soon after as the pregnant woman’s contractions increased and her pain grew unbearable on the way to the hospital. Khan initially didn’t know what to do in this situation but with the help of two other women, he turned the cab into a labour room and help Babli deliver the baby.

“The woman was writhing in pain and the other two women did not know what to do. I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl. The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding,” Shahnawaz told TOI.

After the baby was born, Shahnawaz dropped the mother and the child at Safdarjung hospital and informed Babli’s husband about the birth. He also arranged for a stretcher and helped the mother onto it and wheeled her inside, Babli’s neighbour accompanying them said.

“Doctors there thought I was her husband, and were shocked when I told them that I was the driver,” Khan said. “This was one of the happiest moment of my life.”

Both the newborn baby and the mother Babli are doing well, Babli’s husband, Kumar confirmed later while thanking the cab driver for his kind gesture. The woman’s family now wants Shahnawaz to name the child. At a ceremony on Sunday, Shahnawaz will name the baby after the company he works for – Uber.
