Union Cabinet Approves New Telecom Policy Aiming ‘Broadband For All’, To Create Jobs
A new telecom policy called as ‘National Digital Communications Policy 2018’ was approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday allowing the access of “broadband to all,” Union Communications Minister Manoj Sinha announced.
The new policy is designed and aimed to provide universal availability of 50Mbps internet speed and will subsequently attract investments of up to USD 100 billion (Approx. Rs. 7.26 lakh crores) and got its approval by the Telcom Commission in July after the government introduced a draft policy in May this year.
Sinha was addressing the media conference soon after the cabinet meeting was held, when he said that the policy is targeted at providing broadband to all and as a result create 40 lakh jobs. Along with that, it also aims to provide a “ubiquitous, resilient, secure and affordable” digital communication services.
Moreover, the policy is designed to provide 1Gbps connectivity to all “Gram Panchayats” by the year 2020 and further 10Gbps by 2022.
The policy is planned to make India among top 50 nations in the Information and Communication Technology Development Index of the International Telecommunication Union from 134 in 2017, thereby improving country’s contribution to global value chains and ensuring digital sovereignty, he added.
India is already going through a transformation period in the era of internet-based technologies. The future, as predicted, will have a lot of technologies solely based on internet and to be the forefront runner in the race, the country indeed needs an infrastructure that can truly serve the purpose at the end.
With the launch of Jio in 2016, the mobile communication technology has seen a revolution in the country with every common man able to access good internet speeds along with low priced packages. It resulted in a stiff competition among the telecom companies.
Most recently, Jio conducted a registration spree through its online website to launch its broadband services. But as per the response it received, the company was discouraged to launch such services every here and there. But it is very passionate about launching such services in the near future. Following its footsteps, BNSL and other companies also came up with their own plans at reduced charges with high speeds.
The conclusion is that, the internet technology is all set for a revolution to deliver much higher speeds then before and the target set by the government to achieve the ‘broadband for all’ by 2020 may come true.
