US Open: Leander Paes And Martina Hingis Take Mixed Doubles Title And Creates Record To Win 3 Slams In One Year

In the ongoing US Open Tennis Tournament, the Indo-Swiss pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis had won their third grand slam title in this year. The duo had added another title in their account as they tool the US Open mixed doubles title yesterday. The duo has won the third title together in this year and it was a record for most number of winning titles in one year. Leander Paes and Martina Hingis had defeated American pair of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

Thus, the Indo-Swiss pair was seemed to be the most successful pair in mixed doubles category. This US Open title was followed after Australian Open, Wimbledon titles and all are won in the same year. This duo of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis are the first team to win three slams in a calendar year and the feat was last occurred in 1969 with the Australian-American team of Margaret Court and Marty Riessen.

This victory takes Paes’ tally of Grand Slam titles to 9, making him the most successful mixed doubles player in the Open Era. His partner Hingis took her second doubles title at the Open as she won against the pair of Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova pairing with another Indian partner – Sania Mirza. The World No. 1 doubles pair of Mirza and Hingis took the title at Wimbledon earlier this year and the pair is aiming to repeat the feat.

It was his 17th title for Paes in total at the majors while Hingis, 34, now has 19 from five singles, 10 women’s doubles and four mixed. Hingis was part of both the doubles and mixed doubles victories and is trying to do this a second time. Hingis has found immense success from early on in her tennis career. Hingis can win another this weekend as she will team up with India’s Sania Mirza in the women’s doubles final against Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova.

“I just love to play tennis and I am fortunate to have Leander as my partner,” said Hingis. Paes and Hingis have fine-tuned their teamwork by playing together for Washington in the World Team Tennis league. “Martina is a legend on and off the court,” said Paes, who first played in New York in 1991 when he won the boys title. “She’s my best friend. She’s just fantastic.” Paes is now only behind legendary Martina Navratilova, who won 10 mixed doubles trophies.
