President Obama’s Facebook page will serve as a new place online to engage directly with the American people, with videos and posts coming exclusively from him, said a statement issued by the White House.

President Obama, public figure” was quickly welcomed to the world of likes and within the first three hours of his page launch, Obama gained more than 200,000 likes. Among the early commenters were Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandburg. Joining the Facebook, Obama said he wanted his account to be “a place where we can have real conversations about the most important issues facing our country.”

Obama’s new Facebook timeline takes readers through an autobiographical trip down memory lane, from the photograph of his wedding to Michelle Obama in Chicago in 1992 to his 2009 swearing-in ceremony as the 44th president of the United States. In his biography, Obama describes himself as “Dad, husband, and 44th President of the United States.” But the ordinary guy routine ends there: The page also notes that comments and messages may be archived according to the Presidential Records Act.

In his first video post, Obama gives a small tour of his “backyard” at the White House, noting he often sees a fox on the grounds, a hawk named Lincoln and other “critters”. “Hello, Facebook! I finally got my very own page,” Obama said in the post. “I’m kicking it off by inviting you to take a walk with me in my backyard – something I try to do at the end of the day before I head in for dinner.”

The page is currently being operated by Organizing for Action. A White House spokesman told that the page will be turned over to the next president. “The President Obama account, like other institutional social media accounts, will be passed over to the next administration,” said Eric Schultz.
