The deceased’s father-in-law R P Pandey said, “Sonam was a die-hard fan of Aamir Khan. Sonam and her husband Mayank had a heated discussion after reading a newspaper report on Aamir Khan’s statement. When my son made fun of Aamir Khan, saying what kind of man is the Bollywood star, who wants to settle abroad on the advice of his wife, she got annoyed and ran into her room and locked herself in.”

“After a while, she started screaming and Mayank went in and found her vomiting. It appeared like she consumed some poisonous substance. Sonam was immediately rushed to the hospital around 11.35 pm, where she died later. Doctors confirmed she died of poisoning,” he added.

However, Sonam’s family has rejected the version told by her in-laws. Sonam’s brother Ramesh has alleged that his sister was being harassed for dowry for some time. He claimed that Sonam’s in-laws have cooked-up a story to cover their foul play.

Mayank, who is employed with an NGO got married to Sonam in 2012 and they have a three-year-old daughter.

Police said they are investigating the matter and will proceed accordingly. The body of Sonam has been sent for autopsy. “We are told by the family that there was marital discord. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” Inspector Srivastava said.

Aamir Khan who had touched off a storm with his remarks earlier this week, joining the debate on intolerance said that his wife had asked whether they should move out of the country given the incidents of intolerance in the country.
