“Odisha Witchcraft Killing”: Six of a Family, Including 3-Yr-Old Hacked to Death

Odisha dismayed with the brutal murder of  a family conceiving them as the witchcraft family. Villagers attacked all together on to all members of the family although the family members denied the allegations despite that they have aggressed. The village which is located near to some of the biggest iron ore mines of the nation is now engulfed in a deathly silence a day after the murder of the family.

A table fan whirring, blinking of red LED light from two mobile chargers kept on a wooden shelf pinned to the wall, flies pullulating around the unwashed steel and aluminum vessels that the family used for their last meal on Sunday night could be seen if anyone had a visited the murdered families house.

Eye witnesses of the incident claimed that family members were brutally killed in spite of their requests against the allegations of the villagers. Attack on the Gura Munda’s (40) house left him, his wife Budhini, his daughters Sambari and Namita and sons Sunil and Kushanath dead in a span of 30 minutes. While the nine years old Sambhunath Munda is still battling for his life at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Relatives of Guru Munda’s family  have started arriving the families house since this morning as the villagers are keeping themselves away due to the fear of being arrested by the police. When being asked about the incident villagers refused to answer about the events that led to the killings. Police nabbed down few accused Tumba Munda, Gura Munda’s elder brother and a few neighbors after coming to the conclusion during the preliminary investigation.

Although another accused who had been arrested with Tumba Munda whose identity hasn’t been disclosed. A constable of Joda’s Bileipada police outpost said “The villagers genuinely believed that Munda’s wife was practicing witchcraft and was casting spells on the neighbors’ children. The belief was so strong that even after the murder, no villager came to see the bodies even after police arrived at the spot. No villager was willing to touch the bodies thinking that some evil spell might harm them.”

Survivor Ganitha Munda Recalls Brutal Attack of Family

Brutal incident was recalled by the Guru Munda’s son, Ganita Munda (18) who said how he along with his parents and brother were called by Tumba Munda and other villagers on Sunday morning accused of practising witchcraft while surviving after suffering an abdominal slash. Ganita Munda who is recovering at the Basudevpur community health centre that is guarded by a police constable said “The meeting lasted for five hours. The villagers said my mother was a witch who was casting a spell on her own son. My brother Kushanath was not keeping well for some time. They even accused her of casting a spell on the son of my uncle Tumba. We were warned of dire consequences. We protested, but no one was ready to listen to us.”

Ganita Munda further added that “The villagers were particularly angry about my father taking one of my ailing brothers to a local hospital before consulting a Rawadia (witch doctor).” He said that on Sunday night Mansing Munda, son of main accused Tumba Munda knocked their door after 4 hours of family had gone to bed asking for chewing tobacco, khaini. Killers barged in and started stabbing the sleeping family of Guru Munda a few minutes after Mansing Munda knocked the doors of the family.

Ganitha said “I ran away from the spot and stayed hidden throughout the night although  I could hear the screams of my sister trying to save my father and assailants calling my name loudly. I stayed like that till next morning when I ran to the police outpost. I was too scared to go home,”

Villagers of the Mundasahi do not have much faith in modern medicine although they are located just about 4 km away from the town of Joda. A local 17-year-old tribal girl Gasna Munda said “We have to do a puja with the witch doctor before we can take our ailing children to nearest hospital. Our belief is he can cure us” who is the mother of a child. The secretary of Maa Basanti Youth Club, Nirmal Mohanta said “ the level of trust the Munda tribals have in the witch doctor is “frightening”. For safe childbirth they trust Malibanga Goddess and for other purposes they trust Marangburu (God of the forest).”
