Facebook Will Ban Content That Is Related To White Nationalists, Separatists, And Supremacist

Facebook will ban content that is related to supremacy, white nationalists, and separatists.

The announcement of the ban comes nearly after a year of the revelation that its policy still lets users call for the creation of white ethno-states or lets other users claim that the United States of America should only be a white-only nation.

The change of their policy was announced on Wednesday, it will come into effect by next week, the policy also comes in the wake of a white supremacist led terrorist attack on 2 mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that left 50 people dead.

Facebook already has a ban on hate speech, but now, the social media giant is taking a step further by making sure that any topic or content that is related to white nationalism does not stay up on their platform.

Brian Fishman, the police director of counter-terrorism at Facebook said, “We’ve had conversations with more than 20 members of civil society, academics, in some cases these were civil rights organizations, experts in race relations from around the world. We decided that the overlap between white nationalism, [white] separatism, and white supremacy is so extensive we really can’t make a meaningful distinction between them. And that’s because the language and the rhetoric that is used and the ideology that it represents overlaps to a degree that it is not a meaningful distinction.”

Many call the new decision of the social media giant as a massive step forward and something that was long overdue.

Kristen Clark the Executive Director and President of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law said, “There is no defensible distinction that can be drawn between white supremacy, white nationalism or white separatism. By maintaining this distinction, Facebook ended up providing violent racists a platform that could be exploited to promote hate.”

As the ban is currently being celebrated by many, experts say that before the move can come into effect, groups or white nationalists can rebrand themselves to avoid getting banned from Facebook.

Experts have also asked questions like whether the social media giant has a list of the groups that promote white supremacy.
