A man that was wanted for 15 years, who was involved in a murder case dated back to 2004 in Surat, was arrested in Pune, the Mumbai police arrested him after running from the law for 15 years.

The Mumbai police arrested Vikrant Patel on Tuesday night.

Vikrant Patel was part of a member that killed a person in Surat back in 2004. 5 of the members from the gang were arrested after the crime, but Vikrant was on the run, he managed to hide from the law for 15 years.

The police got into Patel after they were trying to convict the last person in the case.

A police official from the Mumbai Police said: “On January 1, 2004, six men posing as the staff of a gas company had stormed into a bungalow in Surat and looted gold jewelry. In the process, the accused killed one of the members of the family and seriously injured others.”

The police officer added: “After this, five of the six accused were arrested. A court in Surat had awarded death sentence to one of them, while four others were given life term.”

The Mumbai police said one person from the gang was granted parole, he was serving a life sentence, but the gang member never returned to jail.

The Surat Police asked for help from police stations across the county, this included the Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch, who helped the police track down the convict.

The police official said: “After being approached by Surat police, we started looking for him. We received information that he was staying with a man named Vikrant Patel in Pune.”

The police official added: “The crime branch sleuths went to Pune and got hold of Patel on Tuesday night. During his interrogation, it came to light that he was one of the absconding accused in the same murder case.”

After arresting Patel, the Surat Police staff were informed and eventually they handed the convict to them.

Surat Police say that the person who jumped the parole is still to be arrested.
