Shocking Photos Show Animals Left To Die At An Abandoned Spanish Zoo
Photographs that are heartbreaking have emerged which showed animals languishing in an abandoned Spanish zoo, reports show that the zoo closed 2 months ago.
Activists said that there is a high risk of death or escape of the left animals like bears, a tiger, and other animals that are still at The Parque Zoologico Prudencio Navarro.
The zoo had to be shut down after animals started to die in the zoo and a number of complaints were made by activists against the said zoo.
After the closure of the zoo, authorities in Ayamonte, those who used to run the zoo, refused offers that were made to rehome the animals to a better home.
New images that were taken showed bears, a tiger, baboons, and other animals left alone in their enclosures.
The Proyecto Gran Simio (Great Ape Project) said that the lack of security can become the reason why animals could escape the zoo.
Pedro Terrados, the spokesman of the group said, “The zoo is in a state of chaotic abandonment, with depressed animals unattended by veterinarians. There is stagnant water in their enclosures, with great danger of infection if they consume it. It could also become a nest of mosquitoes, transmitting diseases. Most of the animals are doing very badly psychologically.”
Pedro Terrados added that they still do not know who feeds the animals that are left in the zoo, he said that they fear that the animals could die.
Pedro said, “Who would feed them? How? And what diet? How many vitamins to each species? What control do they have? None. We do not know anything. On the other hand there is a tremendous lack of security. Until it came out in the media, they had not closed the way to people, because they left the doors open.”
The Proyecto Gran Simio are urging the council to take immediate action before the animals could die in their enclosures or before they escape from there enclosures because of the lack of security.
Mr. Pedro said, “The animals at the zoo should go to specialised sanctuaries of wild animals. We are fighting in Spain for the state to create a rescue centre to accommodate the animals that are abandoned by zoos or circuses that stop using them. It is not ethical or educational to visit animals that have lost all their essence as a species, where they are bored and withered, and lifeless cards existing only for the amusement of humans. The cages of the zoos are being emptied by death of the animals. They must be closed forever and not used to exploit animals economically.”
The Ayamonte City Hall is yet to comment about the incident.
