Drunk Chennai Traffic Cop Charged For Misbehaving With Woman

A drunk special sub-inspector of police created a furore by groping a woman pedestrian on Arcot Road near Kodambakkam, Chennai on Saturday night, following which her colleagues and passersby gathered in protest and blocked traffic on the busy thoroughfare. On Sunday, police registered an FIR against the cop on locals’ pressure. Special Sub Inspector (SSI) Panneerselvam attached to the Vadapalani traffic enforcement wing was regulating traffic at Arcot Road on Saturday evening when a woman who works at a private firm in the area left office along with her colleagues.

Drunk Chennai Traffic Cop Gropes Woman Pedestrian, Booked:

The woman, a resident of Perambur who works with a company in Kodambakkam, was on her way home at 8.30pm when Paneerselvam molested her, police officers said.

“She was waiting with five colleagues to cross the road to United India Colony when special sub-inspector Paneerselvam approached her from the other side of the road,” the police complaint said. “On the pretext of helping her cross the road, Paneerselvam deliberately touched her in an indecent manner.”

According to the witnesses, the woman, though taken aback by the behaviour, tried to ignore it and started walking on the roadside platform. But, the police officer subsequently called “madam” and waved at her suggestively. After this, the woman and her colleagues complained about Panneerselvam’s behaviour to other police personnel at the police outpost.

Police have registered an FIR against Panneerselvam:

The police officers initially tried to safeguard the SSI by arranging an auto for the woman. By then, the accused SSI too changed his shirt, which locals said was an attempt to help him sneak out of the spot. “But she insisted on lodging a written complaint and action be taken on the police officer. As many people had gathered there and put pressure on the police, they finally agreed to accept the complaint and gave a CSR (community service register) receipt,” said Gadaffi, a local resident who was among the protestors.

Meanwhile, the SSI was subjected to a medical test, which proved that he was under the influence of alcohol. Kodambakkam Police have registered an FIR against Panneerselvam under section 4 (1) (j) of Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act and 75 (2) (a) of the City Police Act.
