Facebook Brings 360-degree Video Support to iPhone and Samsung’s Gear VR Headset

Facebook, the social media giant is expanding its support for the 360-degree News Feed videos in a huge way. Facebook seems to double down on 360-degree videos by adding support for iOS, Gear VR headsets and some consumer 360-degree cameras. These VR headsets are not like Google’s Virtual Reality cardboard. Facebook has now launched the support of 360-degree videos to iOS so that the users of Facebook on iOS can watch 360-degree videos.

Facebook has already launched this functionality and made available for desktops, laptops, Android phones and tablets since September. Finally, the iOS users are the last to obtain this feature. A user can simply move the phone around the air or just by tapping and dragging so as to look around the landscape. The company has also added 360-degree video support for Samsung’s Gear VR headset in order to achieve even more immersive experience than simply waving the phone around in the air.

Facebook Plans to Open New Site for Advertisers

Facebook is planning to open up a new format to advertisers providing them an opportunity to publish new 360-degree clips onto Facebook. Facebook is launching a dedicated site for people who want to start tinkering with the videos. The site will offer tips, FAQs and other guidelines from Vrse, which is a virtual reality studio. The social network is enabling a plenty of brands to use 360-degree videos in their advertisements. The first immersive stories that will be coming from brands including AT&T, Corona, Nescafe, Ritz Crackers, Samsung and Walt Disney World.

The company is also partnering with consumer camera manufacturers to make it easier for people to upload their own 360 videos. Those with consumer 360 cameras from Ricoh Theta, Giroptic, and IC Real Tech will be given the ability to publish videos to Facebook directly from the corresponding camera app.

The significant highlight of the new immersive feature is it allow users to watch videos shot in a 360-degree format from different angles. On desktop browsers, users can even change the angle by using on-screen cursors. The Mobile users can either turn the handset or they can simply drag the fingers on top of the video.

Announcing the news, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post, “360 video is a completely new experience because you can move the camera around. This opens new ways of sharing experiences and makes you feel like you’re part of what you’re watching. It’s a step towards even more immersive experiences.”

The support for the new video feature on the giant social platform will enable people to share a lot more 360 content in the future. The new video feature supports iPhone and iPad devices. Apart from these devices, Facebook also touted 360-degree video support for the Samsung Gear VR headset.
