Haryana’s twin sisters boasting similar equips, costumes which were grey top, blue denims and even the matching emerald contact lenses -they speak with passion about mountains. Twins from Sonepat, Haryana, Nungshi and Tashi Malik turned out to be only Indians to complete the Explorers Grand Slam -the South and North Pole, and the seven summits in the month of April, 2015.

Haryana Twins Create Record Completing Explorers Grand Slam

Both the twins are the only South Asians to achieve this rare feat and are the youngest to do so at the age of 23 years in the world. Sonepat twins were obsessed with the mountain climbing after they started out this adventurous sport as a casual vacation course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi in the year 2009.

Being so fond of mountain climbing both the twins climbed up Mt Rudugaira (5,490m after going through an advanced course next year. Haryana twins later aimed of on the highest of them all Mt Everest to reach their goal and target as it was a matter of proving for Nungshi on representing girls globally while it was a recurrent dream for Tashi Malik.

Although Tashi and Nungshi were set while not everyone was on board. Tashi Malik says that their scared mother very often try to induce their instructors and tell them to fail them as she doesn’t wish to see her children’s struggling so hard. However Nungshi and Tashi Malik nailed all test and proved that they are all set to break through their dream.

Though everything was ready except the money for the twins to carry out their mission. Loathful mother of them took a loan and their father who works with Indian Army has put all his savings at stake to make their dreams come true. Haryana’s gangly girls climbed the tallest point on earth Mt. Everest on 19 May, 2013 who were accompanied by Samina Baig of Pakistan.

Samina Baig is the first Pakistani woman to achieve the feat. The twins and Pakistani woman Samina Baig on their way back to base camp they planned to carry out an 7- summit challenge -climbing the highest peak in each of the seven continents as the next dream and challenge. Tashi Malik said “We took it up to raise awareness against female feticide.” Both the twins Tashi and Nungshi deliver motivational speeches to schoolgirls as the ambassadors of the `Beti Bachao’ campaign.

Tashi and Nungshi have been through many biases being woman mountaineers. The twins claim very often they are treated as the “delicate members” of the crew but once the climb starts, they prove tougher than most of the men. The young girls go through a rigorous training regimen involving a 15-20 km jog every day, yoga, muscle strengthening exercises, and tyre dragging sprints.

Apart from physical fitness mountaineers need to have strong balanced mental readiness to any sort of challenge anticipated by nature so does these twin sisters need to. Nungshi says “We’ve lost 25 of our climber friends in the last one and a half year, where mental readiness plays a key factor.” Suspicious of their return, back to home these two fun loving girls, sisters, leave loving notes for their parents before embarking on dangerous missions.

However, both mountain climbing obsessed sisters claim that climbing is a drug who love to continue to scale peaks. On being asked about future expeditions both the girls state that “Mt Cook in New Zealand and a few virgin peaks around the world” with such a great ease as casually as picking out new shoes.
