Facebook Feud Leads To Gunfire, 14 Year Old Boy Shot And Killed

A 14-year-old boy was shot dead in Milwaukee on Friday night, reportedly the aftermath of a Facebook feud about a girl. The shooting happened at 10:30 p.m. local time (11:30 p.m. EDT) on Milwaukee’s east side. Police heard eight or nine shots fired while patrolling a fireworks show on Milwaukee’s lakefront, said the city’s Police Chief Ed Flynn, according to Milwaukee’s WITI-TV. The officers found the boy without a pulse and with a shot to the head. Officers said they were able to bring the boy’s pulse back, but he died later at a Froedert hospital.

A Wisconsin mother is grieving this weekend, after her 14-year-old was killed over an argument that started on Facebook. “I heard screaming in the background,” said Arifah Akbar. “My son told me that my youngest son had got killed.” Tariq Akbar was shot and killed late Friday night after going to a fireworks show.

Police said a fight started between two groups who had been arguing on Facebook about a girl. Between 8 and 9 shots were fired, one of them hit the Tariq in the head. He died at the hospital.

His mother said her son had nothing to do with the feud. “I don’t know too much. I just my baby was at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong crowd,” said Akbar. Tariq’s mother said her oldest son is being held in police custody for questioning, and because he’s on probation.

Milwaukee Police have taken one juvenile into custody so far. “Words can’t express our frustration,” said Flynn in a news conference with reporters. “This is more than a crime wave; this is a social phenomenon.”

Wisconsin Mother advice for Parents:

She has one piece of advice for parents. “I just want to say to the other parents keep an eye on your kids, and watch their friends and who they hang with,” said Akbar. “Because you never know what will happen to you kid from hanging with the wrong people.”

There were no immediate arrests. A police statement says preliminary information indicates the victim was among a group of individuals who were feuding with another group on Facebook over a girl.

This is not the first time a social media dispute has led to violence. In February, a Concord, Massachusetts, woman was arrested on assault charges after fighting with her boyfriend over his Facebook password.
